Bi-Annual Music Competition

Competition Series

The Vancouver Youth Music Foundation (VYMF) hosts a biannual music competition open to musicians of all ages, offering a chance for growth and professional development. The competition is divided into three age groups: 11-14, 15-18, and 19-25. It includes three rounds: Preliminary (video submission), Semi-Final (in-person), and Final (in-person). The top three performers in each category will receive bursaries, with first-place winners also getting the opportunity to perform with the UBC Orchestra and other local ensembles.

While chapters begin all across Canada, the finals happen in Vancouver, BC

At VYMF, we are proud to host inspiring masterclasses led by renowned experts in their fields, including past collaborators such as Dr. Julia Nolan (saxophone), Dr. Jane Hayes (piano), Jodi Proznick (bass), and Dr. Joan Blackman (violin). Each masterclass begins with a short, dynamic concert showcasing the artists’ technical skill and musical artistry, often featuring works by Canadian composers. Following the concert, students participate in either performance-based or musicianship-focused masterclasses — offering personalized guidance, practice strategies, and industry insights. These events are open to the public with affordable ticketing, and proceeds, along with support from valued sponsors, help make these enriching experiences possible for both students and audiences alike.

Volunteer Performances

Monthly Volunteer Concert Series

VYMF is proud to lead monthly volunteer performances at hospitals, senior homes, hospices, and community spaces across Greater Vancouver. These concerts bring warmth and comfort to diverse audiences while giving students meaningful performance experience in service-oriented settings. Featuring a wide range of classical, jazz, popular, and culturally significant music, each performance helps foster community connection and promote the arts. Students of all musical backgrounds are welcome to participate and can earn community service hours and official certificates to support their educational goals. Through the generous support of donors and sponsors, these concerts are offered at no cost to venues, students, or audiences, reflecting VYMF’s ongoing commitment to accessibility, artistic growth, and giving back to the community.

Chamber Ensemble Coaching

Volunteer Chamber Coaching

VYMF is committed to bringing free chamber music coaching to underprivileged schools across Greater Vancouver. Recognizing that many schools lack access to small ensemble instruction, this program gives students the chance to build essential skills like balance, sight-reading, and ensemble awareness in an intimate, supportive setting. Guided by experienced volunteer teachers, students will rehearse weekly, prepare for performances, and even receive help registering for local music festivals and competitions. By offering this program at no cost, VYMF aims to bridge gaps in music education and ensure that every young musician has the opportunity to grow, collaborate, and gain valuable performance experience regardless of financial or geographical barriers.
